Taking a hobby and turning it into a small business. Originally it started out small in a 12x12 backyard shed just outside of Woodinville Washington. Now currently living and working in his home studio in Sultan Washington. Corey got started in glass with help from his mother, finding local flame working lessons. Shortly after that, taking courses at the Seattle glass blowing studio in “off hand” furnace work for several years. Glassblowing became a background hobby for many years. Even after starting a family, he continued to study online and set up his torch when and where he could, along with taking private furnace glass lessons when possible. This included going to Pilchuck glass school in the summer of 2017. Shortly after attending Pilchuck, Corey teamed up with his brother Brendan to build out a proper home studio. With Brendan’s background in computer programming they started an online live streaming channel on Twitch where you can watch live and chat with them and their online community. If your interested in watching and becoming part of the community and would like to support the channel follow the link below. If you’d like to find Corey in person, you can find him at a local farmers market or art fair near Woodinville, Snohomish & Sultan Washington from May to September.
Starting out small.
Flameworking
Flameworking, also known as Lampworking, is a style of glass blowing that utilizes a high temperature glass blowing torch that runs around 3000+ degrees using propane and oxygen to melt borosilicate glass. One of the more well known types of borosilicate glass is Pyrex, but several other types of glass can be melted. Flameworking is nice for the solo glassblower due to being on a smaller scale and not needing much space to set up a torch station compared to furnace working. With flameworking you can produce all kinds of items including jewelry, sculptures, small vessels, cups, and “functional glass” i.e. pipes and bongs.
Corey, a Woodinville local since junior high, now residing in Sultan Washington, graduated from Woodinville High School in 2001. Around that time, he became part of the Armadillo BBQ. Through working in the restaurant, catering, and eventually being trained to run the office, auto shop, and managing property gained the skills necessary to eventually start his own business with help from family and friends.
